I’m Not a Patriot and I Don’t Go To Tea Parties

Probably no one group has been more used (abused really) than conservative Christians.  Every year we spend untold amounts of time fighting for that important new pro-life law that inevitably gets overturned by a state or federal judge.   Each election cycle we support the Republican candidate that says that he is pro-life.  (Never mind that he actually never gets anything done for the cause, or even supports cloning and stem-cell research as did the last Republican governor of Missouri)   We naively send our children to wars thinking those wars fight  just causes when all the while they simply comprise one more battle in the Elite’s plan to rule the world.   Yet, we continue to do it year after year, election after election.   We do it in the name of patriotism, of conservatism (like Rush Limbaugh), of Reaganism (like Sean Hannity), or we do it in the name of God.

The name of God?  Would Jesus cast a vote for any politician?  Would Jesus run for any political office?  Does he even talk about our responsibility in such matters?  I believe he does.  When one of his disciples asked him to compel his brother to share his inheritance with him, Jesus said, “Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?”  Jesus wanted nothing to do with such matters of the flesh.  He did not come to seek political office or to set others into such office.  Paul speaks about this, but somewhat mysteriously.  He says,

No man [believer] that wars [spiritual warfare] entangles himself with the affairs of this life [politics]; that he [believer] may please him [Jesus] who has chosen him to be a soldier [Soldier for Christ; a citizen of the Kingdom of God]. And if a man also competes as an athlete, yet is he not crowned, unless he strives lawfully [This means that if you want to receive your full reward in the Kingdom that you must do it according to God’s rules]. The farmer that labors must be first partaker of the fruits[This means that the one who does things according to God’s rules will, like the farmer, partake of the firstfruits of God’s Kingdom when it is manifested]. Consider what I say; and the Lord give you understanding in all things [In other words, this is a mystery.  I am not talking about a soldier of some worldly kingdom, nor about becoming an athlete or a farmer.  I am talking about spiritual things, not worldly things] (2 Timothy 2:4-7 KJ2000)

This verse, then, says that we must do things according to God’s rules if we want to receive the Crown of Life and partake of the firstfruits of his Kingdom.  Does he give us a rule here, and if so, what is it?  He does, and the rule is this: “Do not get entangled with the affairs of this life.”  This means to keep away from political involvment.  This is difficult for many of us to accept.  I have been very involved politically.  I won eight different elections, including three terms as a state legislator.  I can tell you from experience that that way is one of death and bribery.  Even today, over ten years later, I struggle with whether to run for this or that political office.  The need seems so great!  It is great!  The need is real.  The world is reeling from backroom deals, bribery, treason, and utter lawlessness.  Countless lives have been lost and debauched by the powers that be and by the lust for political power itself.

The politician wants to rule the world.  Who do you think the ruler of this world is today?  When Satan tempted Jesus in Matthew 4 he offered Him “all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them.”  But, only if Jesus would bow down and worship him.  Paul affirms that Satan is the god of this world and calls him the god of this “age” in 2 Corinthians 4:4.  Do you really want to run for office in his kingdom or help others get elected to serve in his kingdom?  Beware, then, for you may end up worshipping the one who rules this kingdom.  So, it’s really not surprising, is it, that evil conspiracies rule the earth?
