REPENTANCE

The promise given long before

            men alive today recall;

The promise old in days of yore

            going forth to one and all:

Turn this way you simple men;

            be not fools for evil gain;

Turn this way I say, and then

            avoid a life of death and pain

For surely you’ll repay each deed

            by which you hurt your fellow man;

you must repent your wormy greed

            and every selfish plan

There is a way that’s truly true

            where lies cannot prevail;

There is a you that’s really you

            emerging from God’s hail

Hail to smash your spider’s web of shame

            with which you trick and trap;

Hail to break your legs and body maim

            and all your strength to sap

Until you leave your crooked way

            forsaking all your pride;

Until you humbly bow and say,

            “From God I will not hide.”
