I Am A Stranger and Pilgrim on Earth

These days I find myself constantly saying, “I’m looking for a new heaven and a new earth.” This world is not my home… never will be my home. Transhumanists speak of melding men with machines so that they can obtain immortality and live forever. Perhaps they yearn for this because they fear death and believe that this life in this world is all they can ever hope for. I eschew such thoughts. Even if this world and our one life in it proved to be all there is for us, I would not desire to prolong my days here. Remember Puddleglum in C. S. Lewis’ masterpiece, The Silver Chair. During one dismal scene deep underground and held captive by the green witch, Puddleglum tells her that even if the real world he knows and believes in does not exist, he would still choose it over the witch’s gloomy subterranean kingdom any day.

And so it is with me today. They tell us that thousands of paths exist which lead us to God. They warn us we must be tolerant of other faiths, beliefs, and morals because our Biblical truth surely cannot be the only way. Whenever I read any new work which claims to be the truth concerning God or mankind’s enlightenment, I always test the claims by comparing them to God’s word. Many times the work rings true, but each time it contains a fatal flaw. Their “way” to God usually embraces or allows many lifestyles which God clearly condemns. Once upon a time the western world embraced a “common law” that was based almost entirely upon Old Testament law, the Mosaic law. During my life time I have witnessed all the western nations discard that common law and replace it with laws anathema to God’s Word and way. In fact, I have seen the western world change it’s God from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to Baal, the ancient god of Canaan which is, of course, the worship of satan.

Have you noticed that it is always Christianity’s God, Jesus, whom people malign with impunity? Why would that be? Because to be a disciple of Jesus costs you your life. He made this very clear whenever he spoke to people. If you really love your life (the word life in Scripture is often the word soul and means your mind, will, and emotions in this context), then you must lose your life in this world. This means that we have to learn what God means when he tells us not to love the world or the things of the world. If you have been diligently walking with God and attempting to walk in his ways (the narrow path), then you understand the demarcation between the things of the world and the things of God.

God wrote the Scripture (through men) to teach man how to become sanctified, that is, how to become separated unto God so that he can use us. The overcomer has learned to separate himself from the things of the world. He has “come out of Babylon,” the confusion and babble of men’s ways. By coming out of Babylon the overcomer declares to the world, “I am not part of you or your system. I do not love your ways. I love God’s ways. I am a sojourner, a stranger and pilgrim on earth. If you want to live in God’s presence, then journey on with me.” Like the psalmist the overcomer says,

17 Deal bountifully with your servant,
    that I may live and keep your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
    wondrous things out of your law.
19 I am a sojourner on the earth;
    hide not your commandments from me!
20 My soul is consumed with longing
    for your rules at all times.
21 You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones,
    who wander from your commandments.
22 Take away from me scorn and contempt,
    for I have kept your testimonies.
23 Even though princes sit plotting against me,
    your servant will meditate on your statutes.
24 Your testimonies are my delight;
    they are my counselors. (Psalm 119:17-24 ESV)
