Mercy and Truth Have Kissed (Mountains of Israel 11)

God’s government will be characterized by the overcomers’ ruling with mercy and truth. In them, as it was with Jesus, mercy and truth shall have “kissed,” become one. They will rule in love and they will rule with a “rod of iron,” God’s Law. These overcomers whom God calls “the mountains of Israel” in Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Micah will restore the ancient foundations of God’s order to creation. They will be fully glorified in the image and character of God himself. Isaiah says concerning these anointed ones,

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his loins. (Isaiah 11:2-5 ESV)

No one will be able to fool an overcomer. He will not judge by sight or according to others’ testimony. He will judge with perfect insight and wisdom. He will know all the facts because he will be immortal, omniscient, and omnipresent. He will always make the right decision because he will judge in mercy and with truth according to the very mind of God.

Many people fear the implementation of God’s Law because they believe his laws will oppress and stifle them. Many do not want to live under God’s laws because they believe those laws will interfere with their own desire and ability to sin.  But, at the end of 6,000 years of man’s rule we now see the incredible bondage and evil that sin brings. We all live under surveillance all the time. Most of us pay exorbitant taxes on our income, all purchases, and annually on every piece of property we own. The lawless fight for the right to kill their unborn babies up until the very moment of natural birth. This is akin to the ancient Israelites and other nations who worshiped false gods and sacrificed their children to Molech. People who desire to push the envelope of sin into even greater darkness now cry for the blood and property of those who dare say their lifestyles are wrong. God’s Law, though, will free us and the rest of the world from the bondage to sin and the horror from sin that pervades the world today.

Others fear that God’s Law will be implemented with harshness. These do not understand the apostle James who says, “For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. (James 2:13) These do not understand the following psalm by the sons of Korah:

Lord, you were favorable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you turned from your hot anger.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us!
Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again,
    that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
    but let them not turn back to folly.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love [mercy] and faithfulness [truth] meet;
    righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good,
    and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way. (Psalm 85 ESV)

Psalm 85 looks forward to the government of the mountain of the Lord’s house, the rule of God’s glorified overcomers. But make no mistake, God’s Day of Wrath comes first. Judgment is coming upon those who have destroyed the earth. Read verses 3, 4, and 5 from Psalm 85 again and compare those with chapters 16, 17, 18, and 19 from the Book of Revelation. First great tribulation comes upon God’s people (the church and those who call themselves Jews). This tribulation has already begun as we see in the recent beheadings and murders of Christians in the Middle East and Africa and the police state now forming in America. Then comes the Day of Wrath. When great tribulation comes en mass to the people of God, then flee to the mountains of Israel.
