The Meramec

IMG_0483

Bluffs that look over river serene
one of Missouri’s treasures, pristine
We call it the Meramec, clear and pure green

A gentle slope leads me over, beside
rustic wood cabins that seem to just hide
in the hills leading down to Meramec’s side

Birds of prey screech high overhead
I’ve encroached on their land;
now they warn me of dread

The narrow path leads me down, down, down, down
to Meramec’s edge where there can be found
massive old sycamores, white all around

Now fragmented rock hinders my step
on this ancient old road that mankind has kept
to view the great sparkling and clean Meramec!

Note: The Meramec River is located in the eastern portion of central Missouri. Steelville is one of the best places to start a float. These pictures were taken at Meramec State Park just outside of Sullivan, Missouri.
