The Revelation of the Word (Book of Sin 8)

12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.

13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. (1 John 2:12-14 KJV)

These three verses have always been an enigma to me. What in the world is John talking about? Why does he make distinctions here between little children, young men, and fathers? I think it must follow the pattern of “sit, walk, and stand” which Watchman Nee taught us. When we first come to faith in Jesus Christ, faith that our sins are forgiven for his name’s sake, then we must sit at the feet of the Holy Spirit and the teachers he brings us in order to learn of him and understand his ways. “Little children “know” that they have sinned and that their sins have been forgiven. This is the beginning point for every Christian. Every Christian, no matter how old in the flesh he is, begins his spiritual life as a little child who only knows that his sins have been forgiven in Jesus Christ. But John say they know something more as well, they know the Father. They know that God exists and that Jesus is the only begotten son of God. Thus they sit at the feet of the Savior and learn of him.

The young men have advanced further, though. They are strong, the word of God abides in them, and they have overcome the wicked one. They have moved beyond childhood and merely sitting at the feet of Godly teachers. These have begun to walk in the power and anointing of God’s ways. Sitting before the LORD was important for them because it was there that they heard the word of God. They heard the word and began to do that word. Therefore the word of God abides in them. This is why they are strong and this how they overcome the evil one. No one overcomes the devil if the word of God does not abide in his heart. No one overcomes satan unless he acts upon the word of God that abides in his heart.

And no one ever becomes a father in the LORD unless the word of the LORD has been revealed to him. When this happens then you know that you know that you know him who is from the beginning. And who is this mysterious one who exists from the beginning? Jesus the Christ of course, Creator and God of all things. Remember how John began this epistle,

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life (1 John 1:1)

And remember how John began his gospel account of Jesus,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (John 1:1-5)

Now remember the very first verse of the Bible,

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

This first verse speaks of Jesus the Messiah. Whenever God appears in the Old Testament, for example on the Mountain when he gives Moses the Ten Commandments, we see Jesus. Jesus is the God of the Old Testament, not some tyrannical God of harsh law which the ancients named Jehovah. Yes, Jesus gave us the Law through Moses, but he has always been the God of mercy and truth as well. Have you known this God? Do you intimately know your Creator. Do you know him in such a way that you do not cast dispersions upon his written word and call that word evil. Do you know God as the prophet Samuel knew God. Consider,

And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him. (1 Samuel 3:1-7)

Has the word of the Lord been revealed to you? If not then you do not yet know the Lord, you do not yet know him that is from the beginning. You may yet be a little child sitting at the feet of elders in the Lord and know that your sins are forgiven. You may be a young man beginning to walk in the ways and truth of Jesus. You may be practicing righteousness and thereby defeating the evil one. Now pray that the word of the LORD will be revealed to you. Pray that God will grant you knowledge that Jesus IS the Word, that that Word has come in the flesh, that that Word has been written in parchment that we call the Scripture, and that that Word is come in your own flesh. Where are the fathers in the faith of Jesus?
