It is the Spirit of Life that brings revelation of the truth. In one of Paul’s classic prayers, one which I have prayed many times, he says, “Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what is the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he performed in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come: And has put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fullness of him that fills all in all.” (Ephesians 1:15-23 KJ2000)
A desire for truth, any truth, appears to be the seed upon which the Holy Spirit can work. Long ago, when I first began to seek the truth, I did not know that I was seeking Jesus Christ. I only sought the truth, but because I sought the truth, God revealed himself to me. And, he revealed himself through his Word which is Jesus come in the flesh. What is his Word? It is his revelation of himself through man. The Word came fully in the flesh through the man Jesus Christ. The Word also came fully in the flesh through those who wrote the Bible, fully, that is. with respect to those writings which actually comprise the Bible, for those words are without error in their original language. Thus the Bible is the literal Word of God. But, before we can obtain the knowledge of the truth from the Bible, the Word of the Lord has to be revealed to us. This is why Paul prayed the prayer we see above.
Now consider this passage: And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was lying down in his place, and his eyes had begun to grow dim, that he could not see; And before the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was lying down to sleep; That the LORD called, Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you did call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. (1 Samuel 3:1-7 KJ2000)
In this passage Samuel represents many who work in the Church made with men’s hands today. They remain busy “ministering before the LORD” before their chosen man-ordained priest, but they do not yet “know the LORD.” To “know” the LORD is to know him intimately, as a husband knows his wife intimately. Yet, such knowledge can only come when “the WORD of the LORD is revealed” to a person.
