Proverbs 18:4 (ESV)
The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters;
the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
Stop and think about what this little verse says. First, “the words of a man’s mouth are deep waters.” Have you ever tried to read a book of philosophy? You will often find the reality of this statement by reading just one paragraph. Unfortunately, this is often true when reading any Christian systematic theology or other serious work concerning the Word of God. On the other hand, God says that his fountain of wisdom is like the “bubbling brook.”
Have you ever heard a bubbling brook? Have you ever heard a mighty, deep river or the ocean itself? I live in the land of rivers, Missouri, close to the largest rivers in the world, the Missouri and the Mississippi, and right next to hundreds of babbling or “bubbling” brooks in southern Missouri. There is a world of difference between the two types of streams. In the one, if you accidently fall in, you are likely to drown in the deep waters; in the other you will laugh and frolic in the joys of the crystal clear waters running over beautiful rocks and stones. Sit next to the Missouri and you hear the deep gurgling of the rushing torrent; lie next to the head waters of the Current River and your soul will come to rest.
This is the idea conveyed by this proverb. Man’s doctrines, traditions, philosophies, and vain theologies pull you into deep waters where you are likely to drown. They suck you into the very mire where the entire Bible begins, the chaos of the formless and void: “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2 (ESV) (But notice that even here the Spirit of God hovers over the deep to draw you out!) God’s truth, though, runs like a babbling brook. It brings joy, rest, and no fear of loss in murky depths.
Many people find the search for truth to be a difficult thing, and indeed it will be if one depends upon men to find it! God himself says, “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.” Proverbs 25:2 (ESV) God’s desire is that we all become kings in his kingdom at some point, while man often wants to show you that he is smarter than you. So, begin to seek God directly for his truth. He delights in revealing himself to you as you begin to delight in finding him. Once you believe upon Jesus for your salvation you will receive the anointing of the the Holy Spirit. Then, as John says, “the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything—and is true and is no lie, just as it has taught you—abide in him.” 1 John 2:27 (ESV)
So, begin to allow God himself, through his Holy Spirit, to teach you all things about him and your faith in him. Just know that he has written his Word through men and that that Word is contained in the Bible. Read the Bible and let God himself teach you his truth! This is how you abide in Christ and learn how to walk according to the Spirit.
